"“NICHTS IM NICHTS” (Nothing in Nothing) is a reimagining of Arvo Pärt’s “Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in Mirror)” for piano and soloist (1978). The original piece involves a very gradual, repetitive, and symmetrical unfolding of a melody to evoke the image of a mirror in another mirror. I wanted to re-compose this piece as this image itself requires a subject in a room with the two mirrors, or else the phenomenon cannot be realized, and I thought this quality of the piece evoked the concepts of solidarity, liberation, and the gaze. The samples I used were a single track of radio white-noise from NASA’s open-source Apollo 13 mission audio archive. In replacing the mirrors with “nothing” and utilizing white noise from a space mission as the instrumentation, I hoped to draw attention to space reflecting in itself."
